olopa, 2020

Artist: Eli the Great (Elaebi Amaremo)
Title: Olopa, 2020
Medium: Acrylic on canvas

Elaebi Amaremo identified as Eli the Great’s artwork titled, “Olopa (cop), 2020,” shows a policeman in uniform with a deformed face and blood-dripping picture frame. The acrylic on canvas painting is a derision of the police activities in Nigeria. The artist noted that the Yoruba word, olopa, means police in English.
He noted, “The Nigerian Police Force has undoubtedly experienced a massive rot within its rank and files. They are notorious for harassment, acting with impunity and outright torture and killing of innocent civilians. The Police Force represents everything dirty; from the typical black uniform right into the blood in their veins. I consider these people victims of a society that’s built on greed and wickedness, the handwork of the Nigerian ruling class.’’
